Is it just for show or to mark rank? Many students even parents often ask what the next belt will be. Some even try to guess. A white belt marks the beginning of every martial artist’s journey. But how does it change?
In one view, a white belt starts fresh. But training isn’t easy. Sweat soaks in, dust settles, and every fall leaves a mark. Over time, it turns yellow, then orange as the effort increases. With more practice, it deepens to green, then blue as skills improve. Hard work and struggle make it brown. And one day, without ceremony, it turns black, not just a rank but proof of the journey.
The other perspective compares the belt to nature. A white belt is like a seed, full of potential. With training, it absorbs knowledge like sunlight, turning yellow. As roots take hold, it becomes orange. Green represents a plant growing strong, while blue shows it reaching for the sky. Then comes purple, like the evening before night, a stage of transition and wisdom. Brown is the strong trunk, standing firm against storms. And finally, black – the steady, unshaken tree, carrying the wisdom of every lesson learned.
But the journey doesn’t stop at black. Over time, the belt turns red like fire, burning with mastery. As the years pass, knowledge deepens. And then… white threads begin to return. A full circle, back to where it all began, but now with wisdom ready to start again.
Two perspectives. One journey. Whether through dust, sweat, and blood or through steady growth, every step shapes the martial artist. And with time, even the red fades… because the path never truly ends.
